Formal Beaded French Lace Dress

This red silk dress features French beaded lace that is artfully tacked along the dress. From drafting the initial pattern to the careful placement of the beaded lace, every aspect of this dress has been thoughtfully designed. For the lace details along the bodice, I carefully burned the tulle around the lace to create a soft, textured edge, which I then tacked in place. The intricate beadwork of this material adds a touch of glamour to the dress, while the delicate lace details bring an element of sophistication.

An Artist Wearing Her Palette

As a finalist in the Sherwin-Williams x Fashion and Entertainment Council of Canada (FECC) national design competition, I was challenged to transform Sherwin-Williams store products into a unique, high-fashion runway look. Through creativity and innovation, this design pushes the boundaries of traditional fashion by incorporating materials typically found in a hardware store. The goal was to showcase how versatile these products can be, turning unconventional items into stunning, wearable art.

My design showcases a variety of unique materials that contribute to its distinctive character, intentionally resembling a painter's palette. The model embodies the artist, carrying a paint-can handbag as she "paints" her own story. I used drywall and painter's tape to reinforce the delicate plastic painting coverall that I selected as my main fabric, where the bristles from paint brushes are integrated with silicone into the high neckline. This combination of materials not only reflects creative problem solving, but also highlights the versatility and innovation in contemporary design.

Taffeta Bubble Dress Draped in Organza

This dress features a combination of taffeta and layered organza, where techniques such as smocking and tacking are used to secure the organza to the exterior. The taffeta dress forms a bubble skirt and gathered sleeves, contributing to an expanded silhouette that is complemented by the draped organza.

After successfully drafting my pattern, I created a muslin toile to evaluate and refine my design. This crucial step ensured that the pattern would translate effectively into the final garment. By constructing the toile, I was able to pinpoint areas needing improvement and make the necessary adjustments.

Once I had fully constructed my original pattern, I chose to enhance the design by adding extra gathers at the top of the bubble skirt. I identified certain aspects of the silhouette that could be improved for enhanced volume and shape. This adjustment not only added visual interest but also contributed to the overall flow of the skirt, aligning it more closely with my design vision.

Drawing inspiration from a section of my mood board, I aimed to replicate a similar shape using organza fabric. I began by marking a grid with chalk, then employed a smocking technique to gather the material and form a pattern.
